Our Story

The Story of Silhouette

Silhouette began with a simple idea: that every young person should have somewhere they can belong, be creative, build confidence and be given opportunities to shine.

Around eight years ago, we started with approximately 50 young people, a donated space, three weekly sessions and a team made up largely of volunteers. We didn’t have much in terms of resources, but we had an enormous belief in what young people could achieve when they were given the right environment, encouragement and opportunities.

From the beginning, affordability and accessibility mattered. We wanted to create something that wasn’t just for young people who could afford expensive training or who already saw themselves as performers. Silhouette would be a place where everyone was welcome — whether they wanted to perform on a stage, make new friends, grow in confidence or simply find somewhere they felt they belonged.

Over the years, Silhouette has grown enormously. What began as a small youth theatre has developed into a thriving youth arts charity working with hundreds of young people every week and reaching thousands more through schools, performances, projects and community partnerships across Northamptonshire.

Today, young people can take part in drama, singing, musical theatre, Shakespeare, performance, creative projects, backstage and technical theatre, songwriting and leadership opportunities. We have staged large-scale productions and original work, developed partnerships with schools and arts organisations, and created pathways that have helped young people progress into further education, drama schools, the National Youth Theatre, professional opportunities and careers within the creative industries.

But the real story of Silhouette isn’t about numbers or productions.

It is about young people.

It is about the child who walks through the door barely able to speak in front of a group and later stands confidently on a stage. It is about friendships, belonging and finding your people. It is about giving young people responsibility and allowing them to lead. And it is about creating a safe space where young people can explore who they are and discover what they might become.

As Silhouette has grown, our purpose has remained remarkably simple:

We provide accessible and affordable opportunities for all by redirecting the light.

Rather than concentrating the spotlight on the few, we want to redirect it towards young people who might otherwise be overlooked — giving them the space, skills, confidence and opportunities to step forward.

Silhouette continues to evolve, but that belief remains at the heart of everything we do.

Every young person deserves the chance to be seen, heard and valued.

Sometimes they just need someone to redirect the light.
